As stated previously, the amount of concrete and the actual ratio of your concrete mix will vary depending on the size of your shed. On average though, your concrete base will need to be around 3 inches in thickness. Larger sheds such as those 8×6, 10×8 or larger will likely require a thicker concrete base to support the additional weight.

Use our concrete calculator for shed bases to learn what our recommended thickness is for garden shed bases, then input your length and width measurements to find out exactly how many cubic square metres of concrete mix you’ll need.

Laying a concrete base directly onto soil is not recommended. For a durable and stable foundation, proper preparation is essential. This includes excavating the soil, adding a compacted layer of hardcore or gravel for stability and installing a damp proof membrane to prevent moisture ingress. These steps ensure the concrete base performs effectively and maintains its integrity over time.

Before pouring the concrete that will make up your shed base, you will need to install a damp-proof membrane. This protective barrier will prevent moisture from the ground from seeping up and making its way into the concrete slab itself. This step is critical in ensuring your structure will maintain maximum durability.

Whether its for a garden shed or a greenhouse, the process of laying a concrete base for your outdoor structure will largely remain the same. Measure your desired area and dig out the base, then lay your subbase. Block out around the edges of where the concrete slab will be poured using a wooden timber frame (known as the formwork). Add in your damp-proof membrane (DMP) and then begin laying your concrete base.
